Academies for Excellence

The Academies for Excellence recognizes outstanding faculty in the areas of scientific research, educational scholarship, clinical practice, and team science.

Members are elected to lifetime membership in one of four academies: the Academy for Excellence in Health Research; the Academy for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning; the Academy for Excellence in Clinical Practice; and the Academy for Excellence in Team Science.

Academy for Excellence in Health Research

The Academy for Excellence in Health Research serves as the highest recognition of excellence in health related research by a full time faculty member at the University of Minnesota. Those selected will have demonstrated excellence in research as measured by impact in basic and/or applied health science at the lab, clinic, school, community, and/or population level. Impact may be measured by contributions to one particular problem or a sustained record of excellence in many problems. All members of the Academy will also have demonstrated the highest level of ethics and professionalism during their career.

Academy for Excellence in Clinical Practice

The Academy for Excellence in Clinical Practice serves as the highest recognition of excellence in the practice or provision of clinical care by a full time faculty member. Those selected will have demonstrated their ability to deliver the highest level of clinical care, and/or developed and implemented an important innovation for clinical care delivery with proven efficacy using appropriate metrics as further defined by their college or school. All members of the Academy will also have demonstrated the highest level of ethics and professionalism during their career. Note that “clinical” encompasses a broad scope of clinical practice, including in laboratory practice, patient care, community-based health care settings, and public health settings.

Academy for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Academy for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning recognizes faculty who have demonstrated exceptional scholarly contributions to advance learning in their schools and across academic programs in the University of Minnesota. Initiated in 2008, the Academy for Excellence has 23 inductees in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Academy for Excellence in Team Science

Team science is imperative for addressing intractable problems in biomedical and clinical research. Academy for Excellence in Team Science award has been established to acknowledge the valuable and significant contributions made by an exemplar interdisciplinary team conducting biomedical or health care research to address significant health challenges. Nominations can be from research teams engaged in any part of the research continuum. Teams involving community-based investigators are encouraged to apply.
